What constitutes a leader?

  • People who have made a positive difference, not just reached high positions within organisations.
  • Come from all walks of life and have achieved success – by their own standards and those of the community they serve.

Add your comments suggesting what makes a leader in the contect of the Aranui Leadership Project. It’s not about money and elitism – it’s about celebration, cultural diversity, beating the odds, never giving up, innovation….

There’s a very strong theme running through these blogs about leadership and success, which is a pity because there are far more important aspects of life that aren’t getting a look in.
School (and life) aren’t about being successful, although I notice the efforts to define that so broadly as to appear to include everything. The disguise down’t work though, it’s clearly all about how well people have done. I have no inclination to tell past pupils about my qualifications gained since leaving, or where I am on a corporate or social hierarchy, but I am interested in the real life experiences of people who I share a background with.

So I suppose I’m suggesting that we forget about the question of what constitues a leader, because only leadership aspirants care about that. How about what consitutes a worthwhile decent productive and happy life.

Fair enough comment. I see leadership as something that all exhibit in many different ways. It’s not about the position we have or the qualifications we have. I’m with you that worthwhile, decent and productive lives are really important. I love to hear ex-pupils’ stories because there are so many fantastic histories that people have to share.
